It's not without reason that the Porsche 917 is considered by many as the Greatest racing car in history.
It's almost the archetype of the pure racing car. Its design, brutality, power, performances, History, successes... everything in this car makes it so iconic and fascinating not only for endurance, sport-prototypes and sportcars enthusiasts, but all motorsports fans. Even by today's standards, it's still ridiculously fast.
The 917 gave Porsche factory its first overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. It was powered by an air-cooled flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres.
The Langheck - long tail - version, made for highest speeds like on Mulsanne straight of circuit de la Sarthe, had a maximum measured top speed of 362 km/h.
In 1971 the car featured in the Steve McQueen film Le Mans.
Thanks to Internet, Youtube, and the development of Historic racing, there are countless 917 videos out there, so it's hard to choose among them... I will put here a few of my preferred ones.

This car is obviously a source of inspiration for so many motoring artists if not almost all of them. Here's a short video I've made displaying only a small sample of 917 dedicated works of art, with the flat 12 air cooled engine sound in the background ;)
