Ayrton Senna - The Karting Times

Ayrton Senna's taste for speed began very early, at the age of four when he discovered his first kart built by his father. It didn't take him long before he made it the instrument of success and the backbone of his life.

He competed for the first time at the age of 9 in an unofficial race in São Paulo. First pole position, even if drawn by lot. The fate was drawn. Then it was victory. The dice were thrown away.

At the wheel of his various karts, Ayrton Senna won numerous races and championship titles in São Paulo, Brazil and South America. But one of the biggest frustrations of his career was never having won the world karting championship despite 5 attempts.

When, much later he was driving for McLaren in F1, he was asked who was the rival he admired the most, his answer was surprising. The name he gave was that of his great kart rival, Terry Fullerton. Senna said of him: "He was very experienced and I really liked racing against him. Because he was fast, he was constant, he was, for me a very complete driver (...) I have very good memories of that time ”.

Of the other hand, Fullerton said about his brazilian ex-teammate: “Senna has always been able to bring people together. He didn't mean to do it on purpose, but he had the kind of charisma, skill and speed that made the people who worked with him really support him."

Many in Formula 1 thought that this Senna behaviour was calculated. Fullerton testimony showes it was a natural gift. A typical characteristic of geniuses and leaders actually.
