One can say without exaggeration that endurance racing went through two golden ages : The period between 1966 and 1978, and the Group C era.
The
latter is closer to us and may have had its drawbacks as the
consumption rules, and the almost total domination of Porsche between
1982 and 1988 through its own factory team and its customers, but it had
provided a variety of cars and manufacturers, whether they were major
constructors such as Lancia, Mazda, Mercedes, Toyota, Jaguar, Nissan,
Aston-Martin, Peugeot in C1 category or small specialised racing cars manufacturers
and artisans like Lola, Grid, Ecosse, Cougar, Courage, Sthemo, Sauber,
Tiga, Gebhhardt, Alba & Giannini... mostly in C2 class.
The Group C era provided beautiful, powerful and spectacular cars, a variety of engines and technologies and sometimes even some sprint races since 1986 (see Jerez video above). The
most beautiful editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans of this period were those that saw the clash between Porsche and the constructors who challenged its domination, Jaguar and Mercedes.
A truly epic era...
